Gabriele Luciani

He was born in Tivoli (Italy) in 1990.

He started his artistic career by training as a goldsmith. During his high school years, he was trained by the artist Tiburtino Elverio Veroli and he enjoyed making copies of the works of the great masters in the history of Art.

In 2015 he graduated in Oil Painting at the Art Academy in Rome, which had given him the opportunity to undertake his studies in Spain, in the oldest and most respected “Universidad de Salamanca”.

His painting explores and investigates ancient, mythological and sacred themes, represented by the artist in a way that is reminiscent of baroque and victorian styles, but with the same heavily influenced by the Art Nouveau movement.

Below critical note by Rossella Savarese

Despite his young age, his works appear in exhibitions and awards both nationally and internationally. The love for rigor, detail, meticulous attention to detail inherits them from the studies dedicated to the goldsmith’s art, with deepening and structuring of the artistic path thanks to academic studies with specialization abroad, precisely in Spain.

The brilliance of gold appears in his works not only as a personal and identifying trait but takes on a profound meaning, a trait d’union, a line that marks and opens loopholes of light, most often assisted by a wise use of leaves of gold on oil painted canvas. Luciani re-appropriates a “artistic making” of classical declination, investigates mythological and sacred themes through a remarkable and never conventional artistic research.

The chosen work is titled “Acamante”.

The artist pictorially tells the story of Filippo and Acamante, one of the most moving and unfortunate love stories that has been handed down to us. Acamante with a fixed and bewitching gaze turns to the viewer while the other protagonist, Princess Philip, is represented, as mythology hands down, in the form of an almond tree in bloom, following a metamorphosis wanted by the goddess Athena. Upon hearing the news, Acamante rushes to the place where the tree is located and with an eternal embrace reunites with his beloved, favoring the sprouting of beautiful flowers that, to this day, symbolize hope, as well as the return to the life of nature.

The technique: oil on canvas, size 30 x 40 cm, in a private collection.
