Franco Paternostro

Franco Paternostro was born in Cosenza, where he lives and works. From a very young age he showed a great interest in art, beginning his first studies on the concept of form, experimenting with the peculiarities that it takes on in artistic execution. After dedicating himself for a long time to a more refined and above all more refined and meticulous art, the goldsmith and gemological art, he continued his study in the visual arts and directed his attention to the meticulous experimentation of matter and materials. His artistic gesture immediately places him in the informal sector, as the artist himself has stated in several interviews that his art responds to an inner need because he lives deeply, as a man and as an artist, the problems of this contemporaneity, resulting in a very difficult representation in formal and classical terms – Franco Paternostro’s art is on several levels of reading: from informal to conceptual, from rigorism to metamorphism, already ready. It is certain that whatever the sector to which it can be compared, his artistic gesture remains unique and original. It seems apparently strange to have to attribute to an artist of our variegated contemporaneity, a specificity of his own, one and only peculiarity and identity mark. It would be enough to reflect for a moment on the concept of art that from Duchamp himself onwards we try to emphasize, that is, that any object or subject can lose its primordial function and through an artistic intervention, become something else.

Below critical note by Rossella Savarese

Franco Paternostro, calabrian origins, he still lives and experiences his research in Cosenza, his hometown.

Multifaceted, spontaneous, investigator of beauty. After an intense phase of studies and experiments, interspersed with an in-depth analysis dedicated to the goldsmith and gemological art sector, he currently concentrates on the investigation of a completely personal technique. Works of clear informal and spatialist origin are born but which tell of an evident identity matrix.

In reality, Paternostro’s work touches several artistic forms inaugurated in the fifties.

A research that looks at the work of art as a result of a creative process that is an end in itself, immune to a formal value and which ends with the act of realization itself. A contemporary artist who summarizes a profound need to translate the precariousness of our time into art. And it does so by choosing an “apparently” fragile material such as paper which, subjected to a manufacturing and pigmentation process, takes on unprecedented potential giving rise to results of considerable visual-emotional impact.

The Opera selected is entitled “Light fragility”, an unpublished elaboration, realized during the lockdown period and presented to the public during an institutional exhibition in Sorrento, the “SyArt Sorrento Festival” at Villa Fiorentino.

A singular work, highly enchanting. The strength of the colors, the translucent effect obtained thanks to the process to which the paper undergoes, which, once oiled and pigmented, takes on new informal connotations. Exactly pigmented explosions, matter that transship in an outward movement, in an attempt to involve the user not only on an emotional level.

The technique: wax paper, resin and pigments. Dimensions 90 x 90 cm.
